Cataract

What is Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens, which is normally clear. The lens takes place behind the iris and the pupil. The mission of the lens is to create an image on the retina that covers the inner face of the back of the eye and is sensitive to the light. After the cataract develops, the passage of rays into the eye becomes distorted and the visual acuity decreases.

Although cataracts are usually seen in the elderly, they are also found at younger ages. Cataract can also develop even newborns. In addition,  some systemic diseases, some drugs and eye injuries can cause cataract formation. Cataracts usually occur slowly. There is no pain, no watering, no redness. Little cataracts do not reach a level that seriously diminishes the vision, while others decrease vision significantly.

Hastanın fark edebileceği şikayetler şunlar olabilir:

Foggy, misty, blurry vision. Sometimes double vision can be developed.

How is cataract treatment done?

Cataract surgery should be performed when visual impairment progresses far enough to disturb one's daily life. If cataract is completely mature and becomes opaque like frosted glass, it should be treated more urgently. It is even possible for a mature cataract to swell and even disperse in the eye. Such changes carry the danger of permanent loss of sight.

Congenital cataracts should be operated immediately in any case where the visualization is obstructed.

The opacified eye lens is cleaned before surgery. The artificial intraocular lens is then inserted into the eye.

Are there different types of intraocular lenses used in surgery?

Yes. Toric intraocular lenses that improve astigmatism, Multifocal intraocular lenses and Accommodative intraocular lenses that improve both distance and near vision.

Not all lenses are suitable for every patient. An experienced ophthalmologist tells the patient about all the lens options, the advantages and disadvantages of the lenses, and allows the patient to choose the right lens for himself.

What are the Features of Multifocal Intraocular Lenses?

Multifocal intraocular lenses are mistakenly called smart intraocular lenses in our country. The biggest advantage of such lenses is that they help to see in the distance as well as in the distance. In this case, dependence on post-operative glasses decreases. However, these lenses are not perfect. Spinning around the lights for a certain period, rings, starring can be seen. These side effects are due to the fact that there is no uniform optical surface in these lenses, as shown in the lower photo. Therefore, it does not apply to night drivers. Below are post-operative images of the monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses.
